Baron
Bradshaw of Wallingford opened with a discussion of the safety
issues raised in ROSCO’s recent survey. The industry could do more to
present and promote itself as a real alternative form of transport - it
should not be an afterthought for planners, road designers, local
authorities etc. The bus and coach industry needs to market itself
better to decision- makers and make friends with the regulators.

Frank
A Carter, Chairman & MD, Yorkshire Traction shared his best
practice of getting to grips with the growing problems of ‘Vandalism
and Assaults’; how to form a team to take responsibility and work
together to solve it. Passengers will disappear, drivers will be
impossible to recruit unless the problems are successfully addressed.
|
|
Brian
Gibson, MD Video Management Consultants, gave a guide to ‘best
practice’ when using CCTV. CCTV seems to have an important positive
effect on dealing with insurance claims, and on promoting better
behaviour on buses, but it has to be done right!
|
|
Bob
Barnett, MD of Ravenstone UK, gave an entertaining and alarming
insight into the ‘claims-culture’. How do you spot the genuine from the
fraudulent claim?
|
|
Alec
Horner, MD of Minimise Your Risk talked about links between
personality traits, driver attitudes and accident rates. He advocated
psychometric driver analysis as part of a package of tools for
recruiting better drivers.
|
|
Paul
Jackson, MD of AWAKE, kept alive ROSCO’s concern with Driver
Fatigue. He talked about drowsiness and ‘Over the Counter’ medicines.
AWAKE offers training on the management of alertness and sleep for
optimum staff performance. Its work is based on research from the Sleep
Lab at Loughborough University, with which ROSCO has had a long association.
As a special offer to ROSCO members AWAKE is offering a set of 4
posters ‘Sleep Well - Live Well’ for £10 plus vat (total £11.75). To
order the posters please phone: Alexandra Holmes on 020 7693 6165
quoting ROSCO offer.
